Let's get this thing started!
But first, some introductions are in order. My name is Jeff Foley and I am a solutions marketing manager here at Nuance. What that means is that I'm a translator -- a go-between that bridges the gaps between our R&D staff and our sales force and customers. I work with our engineering team to find out what we're developing, and help launch those products into the marketplace by answering the question, "So what?"
I know that people don't want a 3/4" drill bit -- they want a 3/4" hole. So wherever possible, I focus on the benefit of a given solution, and not the whiz-bang hey-neato features associated with the technology.
A bit about my background: I started off life as an engineer at Dragon Systems after graduating from MIT with a EE degree with a focus on signal processing and speech recognition. But something funny happened along the way -- other folks found out I could talk to people. I also confirmed that I was not going to live life as a hard-core coder. So I slowly moved over to the Dark Side of marketing, taking my dangerous technical knowledge with me. After stints at an Internet billing company (edocs) and video game publisher (Atari), I landed back in speech recognition at Nuance (nee ScanSoft) and couldn't be happier.
Over the course of this blog I hope to share my insights with you as a fan of the technology, as an employee of Nuance, and as a fellow consumer struggling to get the service we all deserve in a world of touchtone mazes, nigh-infinite hold times, and unhelpful agents. I'll also be speaking a lot about Conversations 2007, our international user conference taking place this October.
